Otro tramito de camino / Another small section of the road

Hoy empedré otros pocos metros cuadrados del camino. Es muy entretenido ir colocando las piedras de rio como si fuera un rompecabezas. Al mismo tiempo, uno puede pensar sobre muchas otras cosas. Definitivamente es un método de meditación muy recomendable, pues mientras meditas estás haciendo algo productivo.

Today I laid some square meters of cobblestone.It is very entertaining to lay the stones as a puzzle. At the same time, one can think about many other things. It is defintively a very good meditation method and you are doing something productive as well.

A este ritmo, terminaré en medio año de empedrar el camino completo, jeje. Creo que debo pensar en una forma más rápida de avanzar (para los días en que no quiera meditar...)

At this pace I´ll need half a year to cover the complete road, hehe....   I have to find a faster way (for the days when I do not want to meditate...)

Linderos / Limits

Hoy vino un topógrafo para establecer los linderos del terreno. Aproveché la visita del topógrafo para obtener curvas de nivel y  datos de altimetría. Conociendo las curvas de nivel, creo que se puede calcular el volumen de movimiento de tierras.


Today a topographer established the limits of the piece of land. I used also the opportunity to determine the contour lines and heights.  Knowing the contour lines, I believe that the volume of earth moving can be determined.

Uno de los puntos de la poligonal del terreno coincidía exactamente donde estaba un arbusto espinoso. El topógrafo quería cortar el arbusto, pero yo preferí dejarlo y colocar la estaca a un lado. El arbusto no merecía morir por conocer la ubicación superexacta del lindero.

One of the edge points was exactly on the spot of a thorny bush. The topographer wanted to cut it down,but I decided to let it live and placed the stake on one side. The bush was not to die just to define the super exact limit.

Haciendo adobe / Making adobe

Hoy continué con pruebas de adobe.

Hice un primer adobe con el tepetate del terreno que es muy claro y que tiene desafortundamante muy poca arcilla. A pesar de ello, el adobe resultó razonablemente fuerte.

Today I continued with adobe testing.
I made the first adobe brick with "tepetate" (a type of soil of volcanic origin) from the land that is very light and has a low content of clay. Still, the adobe brick was reasonably strong.

El segundo adobe lo hice con tepetate oscuro que encontré en otra obra, mucho más cercana a la cima del cerro. Ese tepetate estaba durísimo y fue muy difícil convertirlo en lodo; sin embargo tenía un alto contenido de arcilla y resultó en un adobe bastante fuerte.

I made a second adobe brick with dark "tepetate" which I found at another construction site, much closer to the top of the hill. This soil was extremely hard and it was very difficult to crunch it and make it mud. It had a high clay content and it resulted in a quite strong brick.

El tercer adobe lo hice nuevamente con tepetate del terreno, pero le agregué pasto para darle una mejor resistencia a la tracción. Aun no se seca, por lo que apenas la próxima semana sabré si resultó bueno.

I made the third adobe with soil from the ground but with added grass to impart a better tensile strenght. It is not yet dry, so I´ll know next week if it was good enough.

Reflexionando / Reflecting

Cuando creía que el diseño básico de mi casita estaba definido, me encontré estas fotos en el Internet. Muestran una casa extremadamente hermosa, curvilínea y bien equilibrada.

When I thought that the design of my little house was done, I fiund these pictures in the Internet.
They show an extremely beautiful, curvy and well balanced house.

The main entrance is also very beautiful! Note the big balcony to read and take a sunshower.

El interior parece muy acogedor y armonioso. La escalera a la recámara, así como la entrada a la cocina están perfectamente logradas.
The interior is very homely and full of harmony. The steps to the bedroom, as well as the entrance to the kitchen are very well built.

Ahora estoy pensando de nuevo todo el proyecto. Creo que voy a construir dos maquetas para decidirme por un modelo u otro.

¡ Atascado ! / Stuck!

Este fin de semana preparé mi siguiente prueba de adobe y empecé a empedrar el camino.
This weekend I made some adobe tests and cobbled a little of the road.

Alrededor de las 4 de la tarde, comenzó a caer un verdadero diluvio. Guardé a toda prisa las herramientas y después me guarecí en el cobertizo para "ver llover". Después de una hora ininterrumpida, me subí al auto en medio de la lluvia para irme a casa. El suelo estaba tan lodoso, que la camioneta se patinó y se atascó en un montón de tierra. Repetidos intentos por sacarla del atasco solamente lograron hacer las cosas peores. Las llantas se enterraron profundamente en el fango.

Around 4 o´clock it started downpouring. I packed everything and then just started to watch the rain. After raining one hour without uninterruption I climbed into the car to drive home. The ground was extremely muddy that the car slipped and got stuck in a small earthen mound. Several trials later, everything got worse and the wheels dug in the mud.

Con  pala y tablas logré mover la camioneta unos centímetros de un atasco para caer en el siguiente...

With the shovel and some wood I managed to move the car some inches to get stuck again...

A las 8 de la noche tuve que dejar la camioneta atascada y emprender el camino a casa empapado y a pie. En la entrada del fraccionamiento, un policía muy atento me llevó en su patrulla hasta el sitio de taxis y ya pude regresar a casa.

At 8 in the night I had to leave the car and start walking home, totally soaked. At the entrance of the community, a friendly policeman took me in his patrolcar to the next taxi station and I could get home.

Primer proyecto en campo / First field project

Hoy fue un día de muy poco trabajo. Invité a mis papás a ver los avances y además estuve marcando en el suelo varios modelos distintos de casa.

Today I didn´t work much. I invited my parents to see the small progress and I also marked some ideas on the floor.

Abajo encontrarán el modelo que más me gustó. En la planta baja hay tres espacios: un baño (el único espacio cerrado, una cocina (el baño se encuentra rodeado por la cocina) y finalmente el cuarto de estar (comedor, sala, biblioteca, oficina, todo al mismo tiempo). En el segundo piso, encima de el cuarto de estar se ubicaría la recámara. Para mejor ubicación del lector: el sur se encuentra a la derecha de la foto.

Below you will see the model I liked most. On the first floor 3 spaces: a rest room (the only enclosed space), a kitchen surrounding the restroom and finally the living room (dining, living, reading, home office simultaneousy). On the second floor, above the living room will be the bedroom. Just for info: South is right of the picture,

Ahora, mientras estoy subiendo las fotos al blog, se me están ocurriendo mejores alternativas, por lo que creo que este modelo pronto será obsoleto...

While I am uploading the pictures, better alternatives are coming to mind. I believe that this model soon will be obsolete...

otro avance en el camino

A pesar de que la construcción debería afectar al medio lo menos posible, hoy acudí nuevamente a una retroexcavadora. En 4 horas hizo el trabajo que me hubiera tomado 4 semanas ininterrumpidas. El camino quedó con una pendiente de 14% (por cada 10 metros que avanza el camino, desciende 1.4 metros). Además aproveché para hacer un pequeño canal en el centro del camino, para desaguar el agua de lluvia. Teóricamente ya podría empezar a empedrar el camino, pero esperaré (en contra de lo que había pensado anteriormente) hasta que compre la piedra necesaria para los cimientos de la construcción experimental. Ello evitará que se rompan las piedras de rio cuando pase un transporte pesado encima de ellas. Aquí muestro algunas imágenes de la máquina trabajando. No pude tomar fotos del camino terminado, ya que se llenó la memoria de la cámara, pero las publicaré en la próxima oportunidad.
