Estufa tipo "cohete" 5 / Rocket Mass heater 5

De las piedras que me sobraron, busqué las más delgadas para hacer la base de la banca. La banca al mismo tiempo funciona como intercambiador o radiador de calor.

From leftover stones I selected the slimmest ones to make the foundation of the bench. The bench will also work as heat radiator or heat exchanger.

Primero "presenté" las piedras junto con las entradas de aire fresco del exterior.

First I positioned the stones and the fresh air intake.

Comencé a rellenar con "cob" (una mezcla de paja, barro y tierra que normalmente se usa para hacer adobe).

I started to fill in with "cob" (a mixture of sand, clay and straw commonly used to make adobe bricks).

En cuanto el relleno tuvo la altura suficiente, coloqué los ductos intercambiadores de calor. Estos ductos de 8" deben tener una ligera pendiente para poder extraer el agua que en ocasiones se condensa en su interior.

When the infill reached the necessary height, I laid the pipes for the heat exchanger. These 8" pipes must have a slight inclination to allow the water that eventually condenses to flow back.

Ya que me sobró lana aislante, la puse entre la banca y la pared. De esa manera el calor se concentra en la banca y no se disipa calentando la pared adyacente.

Since I had isolatin wool left over, I placed it between the bench and the wall. Thus, the heat will stay in the bench and will not disipate through the adjacent wall.

Muy rápidamente llegué con los ductos hasta la estufa tipo cohete.

Quite fast the pipes reached the rocket mass heater.

Adquirí un tambo usado. Sin embargo, estaba pintado. Esa pintura seguramente se quemaría cuando la estufa estuviera en funcionamiento, emitiendo gases venenosos. ¡había que quitarle la pintura!

I got a used steel barrel. Unfortunately it was painted. That paint would surely burn off when the stove was burning, emitting toxic fumes. Paint had to come off!

Siguiendo el consejo del libro de Erica y Ernie Wissner "The Rocket Mass Heater, Bulder´s Guide", hice un estufa cohete portátil para calentar mucho el tambo y que se le quemara la pintura.

Following the advice of  Erica´s and Ernie´s Wissner "The Rocket Mass Heater, Bulder´s Guide", I made a pocket rocket stove to heat up the barrel and burn the paint

Este método funcionó parcialmente: no logré encender un buen fuego dentro del tambo, por lo que solamente una porción de la pintura se quemó. El resto lo tuve que retirar con el esmeril eléctrico.

This method worked only partially: I was not able to make a good fire inside the barrel and only a portion of the paint burnt off. The rest I had to take off with with the electric grinder.

Estufa tipo "cohete" 4 / Rocket mass heater 4

Ranuré la pared para colocar la chimenea en la futura sala.

 I made a groove in the wall  to install the chimney in the living room,

De esta manera la chimenea estará aislada; espero que los gases de combustión se mantengan más calientes y con ello se haga un buen tiro. Adicionalmente, se reduce el riesgo de fugas de monóxido de carbono (CO).

Thus the chimney will be isolated, I hope that the fumes are kept hotter and make a stronger draft, In addition, the risk of leaking carbon monoxide (CO) is reduced.

Tuve que romper mucha piedra y remover una buena parte de los sobrecimientos para permitir el paso del intercambiador de calor.

I had to break stone and remove a section of the overfoundation to clear the path for the heat exchanger.

Presenté la tubería necesaria para el intercambiador de temperatura.

I laid out the piping for the heat exchanger,

Esto me permitió definir el lugar exacto para la estufa "rocket", que será el corazón de todo el sistema.

This allowed me to determine the exact placement of the rocket stove, which will be the heart of the system.

¡¡¡y finalmente comencé a colocar los ladrillos refractarios con el cemento especial!!!

And finally I started laying the refractory bricks with the special mortar!!!

Este es mi primer experiencia con ladrillos refractarios. Fue un trabajo mucho más sencillo de lo que creía, ya que los ladrillos son extremadamente rectos y de dimensiones muy precisas. Solamente tenía que "enmantequillar" con una delgadísima capa de cemento y colocar el siguiente ladrillo en su posición.

This is my first experience with refractory bricks. It went much easier than expected, since the bricks are extremely straight and with exact dimensions. I only had to "butter" with very thin layer of cement and lay the next brick in its position.

Y en breve tuve lista la base de la estufa.

And shortly thereafter,  the base of the stove was ready

Almacén / Storage

Una vez terminado el taller, proseguimos con el almacén. Fue una simple prolongación del taller. El techo siguió exactamente el contorno del talud original. En la foto se muestra la cimbra para colar el techo.

Once the toolshop was finished, we continued with the storage room. This was a simple continuation of the toolshop and followed exactly the contour of the original berm. The formwork to pour the roof is shown in the pic.

Incluso llegó una garza a curiosear. ¿o a comerse las ranas del estanque?
Even a heron arrived to look around. Or did it go after the frogs in the pond?

Con la experiencia acumulada en los demás techos,  rápidamente coloqué la película impermeabilizante en este techo.

With the cumulated experience from the other roofs, I quickly laid the waterproof film on this room.

Posteriormente lo cubrí con tierra y...

I covered it with soil and....

... con rollos de pasto. ¡¡ya tengo un techo verde!!

... and with grass rolls. I have a green roof!!!

Estufa tipo "cohete" / Rocket Mass Heater

Inicié la construcción de una estufa calefactora tipo "cohete" para calentar la casa en el invierno. El corazón de todo el sistema lo hace la cámara de combustión y la primer chimenea.
Es un hogar altamente eficiente que provoca un tiro forzado muy intenso. La madera arde en el ducto vertical más corto y forza la entrada de aire a gran velocidad. Ello provoca que la flama transcurra horizontalmente por el conducto horizontal. Los humos y gases calientes de la combustión suben por
la chimenea a gran velocidad. Se provoca un sonido característico, de ahí su nombre de "cohete".

 Finally could I start the construction of a "rocket mass heater" (RMH) to heat the house in winter. The core of the complete system is the combustion chamber and the first chimney.
This is a highly efficient heart that causes a very intense draft. The wood burns in the shorter vertical conduct and forces the air intake at a high speed. The smoke and hot combustion gases climb through the chimney at high speed. A characteristic sound is created, hence the name "rocket".

Construí y probé un prototipo con ladrillos refractarios. Simplemente los apilé conforme al diseño.  La prueba fue un éxito total: la combustión fue muy eficiente (casi sin humo) y se formó el tiro forzado rápidamente.

I built and tested a prototype with refractory bricks. I just stacked them according to the design.
The test was a complete success: the combustion was very efficient (almost no smoke) and the strong draft build up quickly.

En paralelo, pedí la fabricación de un "sombrero de bruja" (una especie de paso de chimenea a través de un techo de madera, ofreciendo cuidado contra  exceso de calor y chispas voladoras).

In parallell, I required the manufacturing of a "witche´s hat" (a pass through for the wooden roof, offering protection against excessive heat and flying sparks).

Y lo coloqué en la abertura del techo.
And installed it in the opening of the roof.

La última teja que no fue la última // the last tile which wasn´t the last

 Pues sigo avanzando! Ya empecé a cerrar y a colocar las tejas cumbreras.
Progress continues! I am closing and laying the uppermost tiles.

¡Ya falta muy poco para terminar el techo superior!

Kiks vino de vacaciones y le pedí que colocara ¡¡¡¡¡"LA ÚLTIMA TEJA"!!!!!
Kiks came on vacation and I asked her to lay "THE LAST TILE"

pero... desafortunadamente el techo aun no estaba listo...
but... unfortunately the roof wasn´t ready yet...

Así que la "última teja" no fue la última, pero pronto lo será!!
So the "last tile" wasn´t the last but soon will become last!!!

Colocando tejas #3 // Laying roof tiles #3

Al conocido artista Christo Javacheff le gusta envolver edificios en lonas. Por ejemplo el edificio del parlamento alemán (imagen tomada de internet):

Yo por mi parte envuelvo una parte de mi construcción. ¡Aunque mi intención no es artística! Simplemente necesito evitar que las tejas absorban agua de lluvia y se hagan tan pesadas que no resista la estructura:

I in turn wrap a part of my building, but my intentions are not artistic! I just try to avoid that the tiles soak in rain water and get too heavy for the structure:

Las lluvias han sido intensas. ¡qué bonito cielo!
The downpours have been intense. What a beautiful sky!

Mientras tanto, ya completé la primer mitad del techo de arriba y ya dí la vuelta hacia el lado sur!
Meanwhile I completed the first half of the upper roof and turned around to the South side.

Esta foto es varias semanas más joven que la anterior. Se nota el avance!
This following picture is several weeks younger than the previous. The progress can be seen!

Alisando (o colocando el alise)

"Alise":  es un sustantivo que proviene del verbo "alisar", dejar lisito.

Por lo tanto el alise es un repellado fino y liso.

Empezamos preparando una base gruesa o burda. Mi receta particular se hace de la siguiente manera:

mezclando paja finamente picada (para minimizar las grietas y permitir que esta capa "trabaje")

con cal (para impedir que los insectos horaden la pared y aniden ahí), con alúmina calcinada y con tepetate cernido.

Con esta mezcla se aplica el repellado grueso.

Con esta capa se rellenan oquedades y se cubren imperfecciones del muro original.

Una vez que el repellado burdo ha secado, nos ponemos a cocinar engrudo: mezclamos harina de trigo con agua fría y ponemos todo a cocer:

Hay que agitar continuamente para evitar que el engrudo se pegue y se queme

Por separado cernimos muy finamente el tepetate o la tierra o el mineral con el que queremos  hacer el "alise"

Muy poco a poco, la "harina de tierra" se añade al engrudo con suficiente agua para hacer una mezcla pastosa y que deslice bien cuando se aplica

Se embarran las paredes con el "alise":

Cuando el alise se seca, queda con una hermosa textura y un color natural que durará toda la vida. Las tierras usadas en este proceso ya estuvieron a la intemperie tanto tiempo que ya no palidecen más ni pierden su color por efectos de la luz solar.

Aunque este acabado tiene dos defectos:
Es bastante polvoso.

Si se llega a mojar, la combinación de engrudo alimenticio, tierra y humedad inmediatamente provocan la aparición de hongos:
