Plaga en la pérgola / Plague at the trellis

 Empezó a haber aserrín sospechoso abajo de la pérgola. ¡La viga principal se infestó con varios bichos!

Suspicious sawdust appeard beneath the trellis. The main beam was infested with several creeters!

Excavé la madera descubriendo túneles profundos.

I excavated the wood, finding deep tunnels.

Había varios invasores distintos: avispas maternalmente entraban en los túneles con insectos vivos que les daban a comer a sus larvas.  También larvas diversas.

There were different intruders: tender loving wasps entered the galleries with alive insects to feed their larvae. Also several different larvae.

No tuve más remedio que quitar la pérgola y quemar la madera. Necesito impedir que invadan mi casita..

I had no other option, but to take down the trellis and burn the wood. I need to avoid an invasion of my home...

Hoy excepcionalmente no describiré la construcción de la casa. Compartiré fotos de algunos de los bichos que me acompañan.

El estanque se ha llenado de ranas, pero generalmente  son difíciles de fotografiar. Esta quiso posar para mí.
The pond is full with frogs, however they are difficult to photograph. This one wanted to pose for me!

Este amistoso alacrán vino a pasear en mi brazo. Me puse bastante nervioso cuando se metió por la manga de la playera!!
This friendly scorpion came to stroll on my arm. I got very nervous when he entered the sleeve of my t-shirt!!

Estas orugas simulan tener una enorme cabeza con ojos amenazadores. Creo que su camuflaje es muy efectivo!

These caterpillar fake a huge head with threatening eyes. I believe their camouflage is very effective!

¿alguien sabe a qué animal pertenecen estas huellas? ¿mapache? ¿cacomixtle? ¿zarigüeya?

Does somebody know whose animal footprints these are? racoon? cacomixtle? possum?

Esta colorida lagartija vive dentro de la funda del auto.
This colorful lizard lives inside the car cover.

Este enorme escarabajo es muy lento y pacífico. Debe ser muy viejo...
This huge beetle is very slow and pacific. He must be very old...

En cambio este ciempiés es muy vital. Cuando lo atrapé, intentó escapar en todo momento. Obviamente lo solté después de la sesión de fotos.
In exchange, this centipede is very much alive. When I caught him, he tried to escape every moment. Of course, I let him go after the picture session.

Este chapulín tiene camuflaje de hojas.
This grasshopper is camouflaged like leaves.

Estas dos arañas no se están matando, todo lo contrario: están procreando.
These two spiders are not killing each other but the contrary; they are begetting.

Parece que las avionetas se inspiraron en este insecto!
It seems that the planes were inspired in this insect!

Una "gallina ciega", es una larva que posteriormente se convierte en un mayate. ¡esta está grande!
A "blind hen", a larva that becomes into a May beetle.This one is big!

¿será éste el remedio? / Is this the remediation?

Ayer y hoy coloqué un par de metros cuadrados de piedras de rio embebidas en cemento a lo largo del cimiento. Mi teoría es que la capa de cemento:

a) evitará que el agua se permee al subsuelo y por lo tanto no podrá ser absorbida por el muro

b) permitirá que el agua de lluvia fluya rápidamente alejándose del muro

Yester- and today  I laid some square feet of river stones embedded in cement along the foundation of the wall. My theory is that the layer of cement:

a) will prevent rain water from percolating into the ground and therefore will not be available to be sucken by the porous stones of the wall

b) will allow the rainwater to quickly flow away from the wall

No estoy muy contento de usar cemento pero en este caso creo que es una buena opción para corregir el problema de humedades. Sabré si este remedio funciona apenas hasta la próxima temporada de lluvias, ya que durante esta temporada no terminaré de colocar toda la franja necesaria ...

I am not quite happy using cement, but in this case I believe it is a good option to solve the issue of excess humidity at the base of the wall. I will know if it works only after the next rain season. I won´t be ready on time for this running season...

Fui papá!!!! I became father!!!!!!

La semana pasada nacieron por lo menos 20 avispas dentro de mi pantalón de trabajo.

En agosto ví cuando la mamá avispa empezaba a fabricar el panal (ver blog del 10 de agosto de 2009). En ese momento no volví a usar mi pantalón para dejar a las avispas en paz.

Last week, at least 20 wasps were born in my working Levis.

In August I saw mother wasp building the honeycomb (see blog of August 10, 2009)

Since that moment I did not use my trousers to leave the wasps alone.

Hoy llegué y los panales ya estaban abiertos. Lástima que no pude ver el momento del nacimiento. Debe haber sido interesante... Me sorprende que les haya tomado 6 - 7 meses en nacer!

Today when I arrived the combs were open. A pitty I coud not witnes the moment of birth. It must have been quite interesting... I am surprised that they took 6 - 7 months to hatch!

Hubo tres panales que no se abrieron. En uno de ellos estaba la avispa perfectamente formada, pero creo que no tuvo la fuerza necesaria para romper la puerta de su "nido". En otros dos casos, encontré el cadáver de la avispa con dos arañas muertas. Probablemente fue el alimento que les depositaron para que comieran durante su transformación fallida.

Three combs were still sealed. Inside one, the wasp was perfectly formed but I believe it didn´t have the stamina necessary to breake free from its nest.

In other 2 cases I found the wasp with spiders. The spiders probably were the foo left by the mum to be eaten during their transformation.

¿y el muro? Pues progresé muchísimo, pero todavía me faltan un par de horas para concluir la parte burda. Espero que esto suceda el próximo fin de semana. Posteriormente me encargaré de la instalación eléctrica, las tejas y el repellado. 'ai la llevo....

And the wall? I did a lot of progress but still need some hours to finish the main part.Hopefully next week. The: electrical wiring, tiles and rendering. There I go!
