Ayer me ayudaron mis papás e hijas a varios trabajos: corregir la puerta de la composta, colocar un dique frente al cobertizo para evitar la entrada de agua y barnizar un mueble.

Yesterday my parents and daughters helped me with the chores: repair the door of the compost bin, put a small dam to prevent water from entering the tool shed and to varnish furniture

El camino / The road

Hoy llegué bastante tarde al terreno, y solamente pude avanzar un poquito: reparé otro tramo de la banqueta.

Today I arived quite late to the construction site and I had only a little progress. I repaired other small portion of the sidewalk. In the pictures you see the

A partir de ahora no continuaré construyendo el camino, pues tiene un defecto intrínseco: en lugar de haber usado "piedra bola", usé "piedra medallón", que es mucho más plana y por lo tanto no penetra mucho en el sustrato. Ello provoca que las piedras se puedan mover muy fácilmente. Por ejemplo al mover la dirección del auto, muchas piedras se salen de su lugar y las tengo que estar reparando. Aun no tengo un buen remedio para usar las "piedras medallón" que compré, excepto una base de cemento (a la que me resisto por razones ambientales).

As per immediately, I´ll stop building the road since it has an intrinsic defect: instead of using round cobblestones, I employed flat riverstones which does not dig into the soil but lays flat on the surface.

These stones are easily carried away, i.e. when turning the wheels of the car. 

I still don´t have a way to use these flat stones, excpet on a cement bed, but I resist it due to environmental concerns.

Avispa haciendo "COB" / Wasp making "COB"

Hoy cuando me quise poner mis pantalones de trabajo, escuché un extraño zumbido en su interior. Encontré 2 nidos de avispa terminados y un tercer nido en proceso de construcción.

Today when I wanted to put on my working pants, I heard a strange humming inside. I found two finished nests and a third one under construction.

Me dio gran alegría constatar que la avispa construyó sus nidos con "COB", que es el mismo material que emplearé en mi casa. ¡Aprenderé de la avispa!

I was very happy to see that the wasp was building its nests with "COB", which is the same material that I will use for my house. I will learn now from the wasp how to do it!

Aquí se ve uno de los nidos terminado. ¿cuándo saldrá la avispa bebé? Espero estar aquí cuando nazca.

Here one of the finished nests can be seen. When will the baby wasp hatch? I hope to be around when it happens.

Por otra parte, avancé apisonando la zona alrededor de la composta:

On other hand: I made some progress compacting the area around the composting zone.

Aprovechando que se me rompió un saco de cal, coloqué un poco de cal con arena en la base del cobertizo, para impedir que siga entrando la lluvia. Se ven dos zonas con diferente coloración: la oscura tiene 3 partes de arena por una parte de cal, mientras que en la zona clara, la relación es de 2 de arena por una de cal. Veré cuál aguanta mejor.

A bag of lime broke. I used it with some sand to seal off the shed since too much rain was entering it. The darker portion has 3 of sand : 1 of lime and the ligher section 2:1. Let´s see which one is better!

Avances / Progress

Hoy me llegó la piedra que usaré como cimiento para la barda.

En la zona le dicen "piedra blanda" y es más fácil de trabajar que la cantera.

Pedí 100 piezas de 25 x 20 x 40 cm, con un labrado tosco, ya que ese será el estilo de la barda.

Today I received the stone for the foundation of the wall.

It is a so called "soft stone" and is much easier to work than quarry stone.

I ordered 100 pieces 10"x 8" x 16" with a raw finish.

También continué avanzando en el camino. 

I also advanced the road a couple of square foot.

El dia después / The day after

Después de descansar un poco de la ascención al Ixta, me dediqué a leer el libro que me regaló Axel: " Das neue Lehmbau-Handbuch" ( el "nuevo manual de la construcción con barro") del alemán Dr. Gernot Minke. El libro está muy bueno y explica en forma técnica los aspectos que se deben cuidar a la hora de construir con adobe y barro. Este libro también está disponible en inglés.

After a short rest from climbing the Ixtaccíhuatl mountain, I read the book that Axel gave me as a gift:  " Das neue Lehmbau-Handbuch" ( the new manual to build with clay) from Dr, Gernot Minke, a German specialist. The book is very good and explains in a technical way the aspects to be considered when building with adobe and clay. This book is also available in English.

Hoy fue un día corto en la obra, ya que me dediqué a preparar la solicitud de construcción de la barda. Ya tengo toda la documentación para la Asociación de Colonos y para el Municipio. Espero tener los permisos listos en un par de semanas.

This was a short day in the property: I prepared the requst for a permit to start building the wall. I have all documentation ready for the Community Association and for the Municipality, I hope that the permits are granted in a couple of weeks.

Por la tarde avancé en el empedrado del camino y también sembré un Ficus que me regaló Mina hace tiempo. Este árbol estaba languideciendo en mi departamento.. Espero que el lugar donde quedó le guste.

In the afternoon I made tiniy progress in the cobblestones and I planted a Ficus tree that Mina gave me time ago. This tree was languishing in my apartment. I hope he likes the new place.

Ixtaccihuatl

Hoy haré un paréntesis y no blogearé sobre la construcción.
Today I will make an exception and will not blog about the construction.

Ayer y antier llevé a mi sobrina Marion y a su amigo Axel al Ixtaccíhuatl (cadena de volcanes con altura máxima de 5,230 metros). A pesar de que el clima no fue de lo mejor, no nos llovió y la montaña nos trató bastante bien. Subimos por la ruta más fácil.

The last 2 days I guided my niece Marion and her friend Axel to the Ixtaccíhuatl  (17,160 ft dormant volcanic mountain). The climate was not the best, but it didn´t rain and the mountain treated us well.
We climbed the easiest route.

Empezamos el jueves en punto de las 12. A las 4 ya habíamos llegado al Refugio del "Grupo de los 100", donde pasamos una noche tranquilos pues no había más compañía que los ratones que viven ahí de la comida que suben los alpinistas. El refugio es la pequeña construcción plateada que se ve en la foto abajo a la izquierda.

We started last Thursday at 12. At 4 o´clock we had reached the hut "Grupo de los 100" where we spent a relaxed night in the company of the field mice that live there from the food carried by the climbers

Mis dos botas se empezaron a desintegrar y tuve que ponerme los crampones todo el tiempo para no quedarme descalzo.

My boots started to desintegrate. I had to wear crampons all the time so I wouldn´t be barefoot.

El viernes iniciamos la ascención antes de las 6. Amaneció poco antes de que llegáramos a las rodillas. A la derecha del sol se ve la Malinche y el valle de Tlaxcala.

Friday we started the climb before 6. The sun showed shortly before we had reached the "knees". To the right the Malinche ountain can be seen, as well as the valley of Tlaxcala.

Hubo breves momentos en que las nubes nos permitieron ver parte del paisaje. Aquí se admira el glaciar de Ayoloco y de la panza visto desde el pecho

By moments, the clouds lifted and we could admire the view. Here the "Ayoloco" glacier, connceted to the "belly" glacier.



Ya casi llegábamos a la cumbre. ¡Esta es la penúltima subida fuerte!

Reparando banqueta / Repairing the sidewalk

Este fin de semana me dediqué a reparar un tramo de banqueta que había perdido todas las piedras de río. Fue un trabajito fácil y además permite que la entrada al terreno se vea ordenada.

This weekend I repaired a small section of the sidewalk that had lost the river stones. It was an easy task and now the entrance to the property looks nice.

Además, hice un croquis para la barda que da a la calle. Esta semana haré un plano detallado para posteriormente pedir a la Asociación de Colonos y al Municipio los respectivos permisos de construcción.

I also produced a draft for the wall to the street. I´ll make a detailed plan to request the permits from the community and the authorities,

También compré 100 piedras de 40 x 25 x 20 cm para usarlas como cimiento para la barda antes mencionada. La persona que me rectificó el camino con la retroexcavadora es quien también me venderá estas piedras.

I bought 100 stones of 40 x 25 x 20 cm for the foundation of the wall. I ought them from the smae person that leveled the dirt road.


Por cierto, Luis me platicó su vía crucis: su hermano y su hijo han estado sometidos a diálisis porque sus riñones no funcionan. Él donó un riñón a su hermano y un amigo suyo se ofreció a donar un riñón a su hijo. Las respectivas operaciones fueron hace apenas 6 semanas y parece que las 4 personas involucradas se están recuperando satisfactoriamente. Luis a pesar de este drama (ha vendido todos sus camiones materialistas y varios terrenos que tenía) tiene un humor inmejorable. ¡digno de admiración y ejemplo!

By the way: Luis shared with me his "via crucis"; his brother and son are in dialisis since their kidneys malfunction. He donated a kidney to his brother and a friend offer his kidney for his son.
The transplants were done only 6 weeks ago and it seems that the 4 persons involved are recovering well. Luis had to sell properties and trucks to pay for the operations. Notwithstanding, he has an excellent mood.A good example to follow!
