Empredrando el camino // paving the road with cobblestones

El camino es intransitable en época de lluvias...

Así que compré muchas piedras de río...muchísimas...
So I bought river stones...many...

El camino tiene pendiente hacia el centro. El agua de lluvia se colecta en el canal del medio.

The road is sloped towards the center. The channel in the middle collects the rain water.

Siguiendo el consejo de Helmut, puse diques de cemento para evitar que las piedras se deslicen hacia abajo. Los diques son de cemento blanco y van formando una viborita.

Following Helmut´s advice, I placed containment "dams" to avoid the stones from slipping down. The dams are from white cement and form a snake.

El camino / The road

Hoy llegué bastante tarde al terreno, y solamente pude avanzar un poquito: reparé otro tramo de la banqueta.

Today I arived quite late to the construction site and I had only a little progress. I repaired other small portion of the sidewalk. In the pictures you see the

A partir de ahora no continuaré construyendo el camino, pues tiene un defecto intrínseco: en lugar de haber usado "piedra bola", usé "piedra medallón", que es mucho más plana y por lo tanto no penetra mucho en el sustrato. Ello provoca que las piedras se puedan mover muy fácilmente. Por ejemplo al mover la dirección del auto, muchas piedras se salen de su lugar y las tengo que estar reparando. Aun no tengo un buen remedio para usar las "piedras medallón" que compré, excepto una base de cemento (a la que me resisto por razones ambientales).

As per immediately, I´ll stop building the road since it has an intrinsic defect: instead of using round cobblestones, I employed flat riverstones which does not dig into the soil but lays flat on the surface.

These stones are easily carried away, i.e. when turning the wheels of the car. 

I still don´t have a way to use these flat stones, excpet on a cement bed, but I resist it due to environmental concerns.

Reparando banqueta / Repairing the sidewalk

Este fin de semana me dediqué a reparar un tramo de banqueta que había perdido todas las piedras de río. Fue un trabajito fácil y además permite que la entrada al terreno se vea ordenada.

This weekend I repaired a small section of the sidewalk that had lost the river stones. It was an easy task and now the entrance to the property looks nice.

Además, hice un croquis para la barda que da a la calle. Esta semana haré un plano detallado para posteriormente pedir a la Asociación de Colonos y al Municipio los respectivos permisos de construcción.

I also produced a draft for the wall to the street. I´ll make a detailed plan to request the permits from the community and the authorities,

También compré 100 piedras de 40 x 25 x 20 cm para usarlas como cimiento para la barda antes mencionada. La persona que me rectificó el camino con la retroexcavadora es quien también me venderá estas piedras.

I bought 100 stones of 40 x 25 x 20 cm for the foundation of the wall. I ought them from the smae person that leveled the dirt road.


Por cierto, Luis me platicó su vía crucis: su hermano y su hijo han estado sometidos a diálisis porque sus riñones no funcionan. Él donó un riñón a su hermano y un amigo suyo se ofreció a donar un riñón a su hijo. Las respectivas operaciones fueron hace apenas 6 semanas y parece que las 4 personas involucradas se están recuperando satisfactoriamente. Luis a pesar de este drama (ha vendido todos sus camiones materialistas y varios terrenos que tenía) tiene un humor inmejorable. ¡digno de admiración y ejemplo!

By the way: Luis shared with me his "via crucis"; his brother and son are in dialisis since their kidneys malfunction. He donated a kidney to his brother and a friend offer his kidney for his son.
The transplants were done only 6 weeks ago and it seems that the 4 persons involved are recovering well. Luis had to sell properties and trucks to pay for the operations. Notwithstanding, he has an excellent mood.A good example to follow!

Otro tramito de camino / Another small section of the road

Hoy empedré otros pocos metros cuadrados del camino. Es muy entretenido ir colocando las piedras de rio como si fuera un rompecabezas. Al mismo tiempo, uno puede pensar sobre muchas otras cosas. Definitivamente es un método de meditación muy recomendable, pues mientras meditas estás haciendo algo productivo.

Today I laid some square meters of cobblestone.It is very entertaining to lay the stones as a puzzle. At the same time, one can think about many other things. It is defintively a very good meditation method and you are doing something productive as well.

A este ritmo, terminaré en medio año de empedrar el camino completo, jeje. Creo que debo pensar en una forma más rápida de avanzar (para los días en que no quiera meditar...)

At this pace I´ll need half a year to cover the complete road, hehe....   I have to find a faster way (for the days when I do not want to meditate...)

¡ Atascado ! / Stuck!

Este fin de semana preparé mi siguiente prueba de adobe y empecé a empedrar el camino.
This weekend I made some adobe tests and cobbled a little of the road.

Alrededor de las 4 de la tarde, comenzó a caer un verdadero diluvio. Guardé a toda prisa las herramientas y después me guarecí en el cobertizo para "ver llover". Después de una hora ininterrumpida, me subí al auto en medio de la lluvia para irme a casa. El suelo estaba tan lodoso, que la camioneta se patinó y se atascó en un montón de tierra. Repetidos intentos por sacarla del atasco solamente lograron hacer las cosas peores. Las llantas se enterraron profundamente en el fango.

Around 4 o´clock it started downpouring. I packed everything and then just started to watch the rain. After raining one hour without uninterruption I climbed into the car to drive home. The ground was extremely muddy that the car slipped and got stuck in a small earthen mound. Several trials later, everything got worse and the wheels dug in the mud.

Con  pala y tablas logré mover la camioneta unos centímetros de un atasco para caer en el siguiente...

With the shovel and some wood I managed to move the car some inches to get stuck again...

A las 8 de la noche tuve que dejar la camioneta atascada y emprender el camino a casa empapado y a pie. En la entrada del fraccionamiento, un policía muy atento me llevó en su patrulla hasta el sitio de taxis y ya pude regresar a casa.

At 8 in the night I had to leave the car and start walking home, totally soaked. At the entrance of the community, a friendly policeman took me in his patrolcar to the next taxi station and I could get home.

El camino avanza más / The road shows more progress

Hoy pedí a mi papá a ayudarme. Me ayudó a esparcir grava y compactarla al nivel deseado. Logramos avanzar unos 4 metros (y ya solamente faltan 44 metros más...) . En realidad estoy haciendo todo al revés: debería empedrar el camino hasta que esté más avanzada la obra, ya que es previsible que habrá algunos transportes pesados bajando al terreno. Con su peso, tal vez fracturen las piedras del camino o por lo menos las muevan de lugar. Sin embargo, "se me queman las habas" por empezar a empedrar aunque sea una pequeña sección para ver cómo va quedando.

Today I asked dad to help me out. He helped me to shovel gravel and compact it. We advanced 4 meters (onl 44 more to go...). I am making everything the other way around:  should start paving the road once the construction is much more advanced since it is likely that heavy transports will drive down. With their weight, they may brake stones or move them. However, "my hands are burning to get started" and I´d like to put cobblestones in a small area just to get a feeling.





La Galleta Galáctica hizo algunos diseños para intercalar piedritas blancas entre las piedras grises. ¡¡¡ quiero ver el diseño final en el campo pronto!!!
