Pintando con cal / Painting with lime

Entre las cosas que aprendí en el taller de pinturas a la cal, fue el uso de aditivos para mitigar o impedir que la pintura suelte polvillo de cal. Nos dijeron que el aditivo ideal era la caseína. En segundo lugar la dextrina. Como no encontré caseína en el mercado, hice pruebas con dextrina.

Among the things I learned in the workshop on lime paints was the use of additives to mitigate or prevent that the paint generates lime dust. They told us that the ideal additive was caseine and in second place the dextrine. Since I couldn´t find caseine in the marketplace, I made tests with dextrine.

Empecé con diversas dosis de dextrina.Inicialmente las intenté diluir en agua y agregar a la cal en pasta.

I started with different dosis of dextrine. Initially I tried to dillute the dextrine in water and then add to the lime paste.

La idea no resultó bien.  La dextrina se hizo grumos una vez agregada a la cal en pasta. Fue muy laborioso deshacer y disolver los grumos.

The idea was not very good. The dextrine formed clumps once added to the lime paste. I took a great deal of work to separate and dilute the clumps.

¿la solución? Disolver la dextrina en agua muy caliente y después agregar a la cal en pasta. La única pequeña desventaja es que la dextrina imparte una tonalidad ligeramente amarilla a la cal.

The solution? Dissolve the dextrine in very hot water and then add to the lime paste. The only small disadvantage was that the dextrine gave a yellow hue to the lime.

Aquí la primer mano. La pintura se aplica muy fácilmente, pero no cubre mucho.Tuve que dar 4 manos para que quedara bien.

Here the first hand. The paint is applied very easily, but it does not cover much. I had to put 4 hands until it was good.

La gran incógnita: ¿en cuánto tiempo tendré que darle mantenimiento?

The big unknown: how long until I have to maintain it?

 Solamente pinté el cuarto de lectura y el cubo de la escalera. Las demás habitaciones conservarán el color tierra.

I only painted the reading room and the stairway. The other rooms will keep the earthen color.

Aun me falta la transición de blanco a color tierra. Estoy pensando en una especie de hojas de alcachofa que se vayan oscureciendo sucesivamente.

I still have to transition from white to earthen color. I am thinking of a kind of artichoke leaves that get successively darker

Experimentando con Seudo - Tadelakt / Experimenting with pseudo - Tadelakt

En  Internet encontré "Tadelakt", una técnica de Marruecos para crear recubrimientos de cal muy bonitos y casi impermeables. Se pule y bruñe un repello de cal con una piedra muy lisa. Posteriormente se sella con una capa de "savon noir" (jabón negro).

In the internet I found  "Tadelakt", a technique from Morocco to create beautiful and almost waterproof lime plasters. A thick lime plaster is polished and burnished with a very smooth stone. Then it is sealed with "savon noir" (black soap).

¡Manos a la obra! Usé la pasta de cal que pigmenté en "color pastel durazno". 

Hands to work! I used the lime paste pigmented earlier with a "pastel peachy color"

Apliqué esta pasta en un área pequeñita, abajo del lavabo para hacer pruebas. Así no se verá si queda fea. Pulí la superficie con una espátula metálica.

I applied this paste in a small area, below the sink, to do some tests. It will remain hidden, so no problem if it turns out ugly.  I burnished the surface with a steel spatula.

¿y qué es el "savon noir" con que se recubre el repello de cal? Encontré versiones contradictorias en internet:  jabón con aceite y pasta de olivo,  o hecho de particulares  pescados marroquíes , o con aceites de eucalipto.  Dada la confusión, hice lo que me dictó el sentido común. Combiné jabón común con aceite de oliva.

And what is the "savon noir" used to seal the lime plaster? I found some contradicting versions in internet: soap with olive oil and paste, or made of a particular Moroccan fish species, or with eucalyptus oils. Given the confusion, I used common sense. I combined plain washing soap with olive oil.

Resultó una pasta viscosa con la que embadurné el repello.
A thick slimy paste was the result. I used it to daub it to the plaster.

El resultado fue "no malo", pero no me dejó feliz.
The result was "not bad", but I am not happy.

Me aventuré a "tadelaktear" todo el cubículo del lavabo. Preferí hacerlo sin pigmento. El resultado fue un poco mejor.
I ventured into "tadelakting" the small space that houses the sink. I decided to do it without pigment. The result was slightly better.

¡Incluso hay algunas áreas que brillan!
Some spots are even shiny!

Pinturas a la cal 2 / paints with lime 2

Para  pigmentos, me recomendaron una tienda dedicada a productos para el arte. La casa Serra tiene 113 años de existir y ha atendido pintores de la talla de Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo. 

Tiene un catálogo extensísimo de pigmentos, todos ellos muy hermosos.

To get good pigments, someone recommended a store specialized in products for art. "Casa Serra" has been around for 113 years and has served painters such as Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo.

They have a very big catalogue of most beautiful pigments.

Quería comprar solamente dos colores y acabé adquiriendo 6, pues me gustaron mucho y quiero experimentar con ellos.

Originally I wanted to get just 2 colors but I ended buying 6; I liked them very much and I want to make some testing with them,

En cuanto llegué a casa, empecé inmediatamente a probar los pigmentos. El anaranjado es hermosísimo.
As soon as I got home, I started trying the pigments. The orange color is really gorgeous!

Diluí el color en un poco de agua, para mezclarlo posteriormente con la cal en pasta. La intensidad se mantuvo perfectamente.

I dilluted the color in water, to blend it with the lime paste. The intensity of the pigment stayed the same.

Añadí el pigmento a la cal y ...

I added the pigment to the lime and...

... el vibrante anaranjado se convirtió en un color durazno pastel...

... the vibrant orange changed into a peachy pastel color...

¡Muy distinto al color original! Tendré que seguir haciendo pruebas.

Very different from the original color. I´ll have to make more tests.

Ensayando repellos de cal / First trials with lime plasters

¡Al fin llegó la pasta en cal!

Inmediatamente me puse a experimentar en la casita . Mojé la pared de adobe e intenté aplicar la pasta de cal.

The lime paste finally arrived!

I started experimenting immediately in the little house. I wetted the adobe wall and tried to apply the lime paste.

Por mi falta total de experiencia en aplicar repellos, la mitad del material terminó en el piso...
No obstante, logré de alguna manera cubrir un área representativa.

Due to a total lack of experience in applying plasters, half of the material ended in the floor...
However, I somehow managed to cover a representative surface.

Armado con esa "amplia" experiencia, puse manos a la obra en la recámara de arriba. Labré un nicho en la pared, donde se alojará la puerta corrediza.

Armed with that "ample" experience, I put hands to work in the upper bedroom. I carved a niche in the wall, where the sliding door will be housed.

Rápidamente la repellé con tierra. Quedó razonablemente bien.
Quickly I rendered it with earth. It ended reasonably well.

¡Y ahora sí! A agitar la pasta de cal.
And finally! Let´s stirr the lime paste.

Creo que empecé con lo más difícil: hacer esquinas redondadas. Recurrí al viejo método de embarrar y esculpir todo con las manos...

I think I started with the most difficult: make rounded corners. I resorted to the old method of wiping and sculpting everything by hand...

Después de mucho practicar y equivocarme, quedó "más o menos" el terminado. Bastante burdo y disparejo.  La causa: no tuve la precaución de hacer una base parejita. La pasta en cal obviamente copió la superficie irregular.

After a lot of testing and making mistakes, the finsh ended more or less mediocre. Quite rough and uneven. The cause: I dind´t properly prepare the base. The lime paste obviously copied the irregular surface.

Pinturas a la cal 1 / Lime paints 1

El año pasado por estas fechas asistí a un taller de pinturas naturales para interiores.

Este curso lo impartió Laurent Coquemont en Cuernavaca.

El tema central: las diversas cales existentes y cómo usarlas como vehículo de colores para recubrir casas.

Last year around these days I attended to a workshop for natural paints for interiors. This course was taught by Laurent Coquemont in Cuernavaca.

The central theme: diverse limes and how to use them as a vehicle for colors to cover houses.

El taller comenzó con conceptos básicos, por ejemplo:

* la diferencia entre pigmentos y tintes
* cales ultrapuras vs. cales con ligeras impurezas
* cales recién preparadas vs. pastas de cal añejadas

The workshop started with basics as:
* difference between pigments and dyes
* ultrapure lime vs. lime with some impurities
* lime paste recently prepared vs. aged

Se explicó que las mejores pastas de cal son altamente puras y deben ser humedecidas y añejadas bajo agua por al menos 6 meses. Este largo tiempo de espera permite que las "laminillas" que constituyen a la cal se  separen y hagan una crema muy muy suave e ideal para preparar pinturas a la cal. La cal pura no solidifica ni se carbonata bajo agua.

It was explained that the best lime pastes are highly pure and must be soaked and aged under water for at least 6 months. This long waiting time allows for the microscopic "scales" than conform the lime to disaggregate, separate and make a very, very soft and creamy past best suited for preparing lime paints. Pure lime will not become solid or carbonate below water.

La cal se convierte en agente para recubrir al tiempo que es un vehículo para los pigmentos que se le agreguen.

The lime works as a covering agent at the same time that it becomes a vehicle for the pigments that are added.

Por supuesto, la cal y el pigmento simplemente  se adherirán débilmente a las paredes y se desprenderán como polvo con suma facilidad.
Por ello hay que mezclarles un aditivo para "pegar" o aglutinar la cal. Por ejemplo: mucílago de nopal, caseína, dextrina, jabón, almidón.

Of course, the lime and pigment will adhere weakly to walls and will fall off easily like powder.
Therefore, an additive must be added to "glue" or bind it together. I.e: cactus mucilage, caseine, dextrine, soap, starch.

Dado su bajo costo y fácil manejo, se recomendó el uso de dextrina:
Due to its low cost and easy workability, it was recomended to use dextrine:

A la cal en pasta se le agregan diversos pigmentos minerales (los pigmentos orgánicos no sirven aquí, pues el pH de la cal los destruye).

Mineral pigments are added to the lime paste (organic pigments will not work here as the pH of the lime will destroy them).

Hicimos varias pruebas con diversos pigmentos y aditivos. 

Una vez que se secan, todos los colores se vuelven pastel.

We did several trials with diverse pigments and additives.

Once they dry, all the colors become pastel shade.

El aclaramiento mostrado de izquierda a derecha simplemente diluyendo con más pasta en cal.
The dark to light from left to right is achieved simply by diluting the color into more lime paste.

Dependiendo de la dilución de la pasta de cal con agua se distingue entre:

1:3 "encalado". Transforma la superficie
1:10 "lavado". Apenas y transforma la superficie
1:20 "aguafuerte". Es traslúcido y se usa para colores oscuros o vivos. Hay que aplicar 7 capas o más
1:40 "pátina". Aun más débil que el aguafuerte, por lo que requiere muchas capas.

Si al encalado se le agrega arena para mayor textura, se le llama "jabelga".
¿y ahora qué sigue?  ¡a experimentar con cal y pigmentos!


Depending upon the dilution of the lime paste with water, these are the classifications:

1:3 "whitewash. Will transform the surface
1:10 "light whitewash". Hardly transforms the surface
1:20 "etching". It is translucent and used for lively or dark colors. 7 or more layers must be applied
1:40 "patina". Weaker than etching and will require many layers.

And what comes next? Experiment with lime and pigments!

Hoy excepcionalmente no describiré la construcción de la casa. Compartiré fotos de algunos de los bichos que me acompañan.

Today I won´t continue describing the house building. I´ll share pictures of some of the creepers that live with me.

Two particular moths. May they be in a beauty contest?

El estanque se ha llenado de ranas, pero generalmente  son difíciles de fotografiar. Esta quiso posar para mí.
The pond is full with frogs, however they are difficult to photograph. This one wanted to pose for me!

Este amistoso alacrán vino a pasear en mi brazo. Me puse bastante nervioso cuando se metió por la manga de la playera!!
This friendly scorpion came to stroll on my arm. I got very nervous when he entered the sleeve of my t-shirt!!

Estas orugas simulan tener una enorme cabeza con ojos amenazadores. Creo que su camuflaje es muy efectivo!

These caterpillar fake a huge head with threatening eyes. I believe their camouflage is very effective!

¿alguien sabe a qué animal pertenecen estas huellas? ¿mapache? ¿cacomixtle? ¿zarigüeya?

Does somebody know whose animal footprints these are? racoon? cacomixtle? possum?

Esta colorida lagartija vive dentro de la funda del auto.
This colorful lizard lives inside the car cover.

Este enorme escarabajo es muy lento y pacífico. Debe ser muy viejo...
This huge beetle is very slow and pacific. He must be very old...

En cambio este ciempiés es muy vital. Cuando lo atrapé, intentó escapar en todo momento. Obviamente lo solté después de la sesión de fotos.
In exchange, this centipede is very much alive. When I caught him, he tried to escape every moment. Of course, I let him go after the picture session.

Una lombriz con cabeza de martillo.
A worm with a hammer-like head.

Este chapulín tiene camuflaje de hojas.
This grasshopper is camouflaged like leaves.

Estas dos arañas no se están matando, todo lo contrario: están procreando.
These two spiders are not killing each other but the contrary; they are begetting.

Parece que las avionetas se inspiraron en este insecto!
It seems that the planes were inspired in this insect!

Una "gallina ciega", es una larva que posteriormente se convierte en un mayate. ¡esta está grande!
A "blind hen", a larva that becomes into a May beetle.This one is big!
