Cal bruñida (intento) / Burnished lime (sort of)

 Practicaré en la pared de mi taller para perfeccionar la técnica de la cal pigmentada y bruñida. Si sale mal, el impacto será mínimo.

Haré la prueba con algunos de los pigmentos de experimentos anteriores.

I´ll practice at the wall of my toolshop to improve the technique of pigmented and burnished lime. If it goes wrong the impact will be low.

I´ll make some tests with the pigments from previous trials.

¡Al mezclar los colores con la cal en pasta, se hacen patrones muy hermosos!

When mixing the dyes with the lime paste, beautiful patterns are created!

Apliqué varias pruebas con diferentes colores y concentraciones para descubrir cómo queda el tono final. ¡El collage se ve bastante bien!

I pasted several tests with different colors and concentrations to discover the final hue.

The patchwork looks good!

Posteriormente bruñí la cal con una mezcla de aceite de oliva y jabón para darle un terminado lustroso e impermeable.  Bruñir:  pulir muy finamente para abrillantar las superficies.

Then I burnished the lime with a mixture of olive oil with soap to achieve a shiny and water-proof finish.  Burnish: very fine polishing to make shiny surfaces.

¿alguna vez podré hacer algo parecido a esto en un muro? O en una banca?

May I reach the ability to make something like this in a wall? Or on a bench?

 Apliqué un terminado burdo sobre la estufa y la banca.

Preparé una mezcla con dos partes de cal, una parte de tepetate cernido, una de alúmina calcinada y una y media de paja finamente molida

I plastered a coarse finish on the stove and the bench.

Prepared a mixture with two parts of lime, one of fine "tepetate" (local sandstone", one of calcined alumina and one and a half of finely chopped straw.

La consistencia queda muy cremosa, muy fácil para aplicar.

The consistency is creamy, very easy to smear.

Para el terminado final, me he decidido: ¡¡¡cal pigmentada y bruñida (una especie de Tadelakt)!!!

Como no conozco la técnica, tendré que aprenderla y practicarla.

For the final finish, I have decided: pigmented and burnished lime (kind of Tadelakt)!!!

Since I do not know the technique, I´ll have to learn and train it.

En la épica Fiesta del Fuego, mis amigos me ayudaron a "hacer el trabajo sucio" de colocar cientos de kg de "cob" para llevar la banca cerca de sus dimensiones finales. Ahora haré el "trabajo limpio" del terminado.

At the epic Fire Party, my friends helped me with the "dirty job" of layimg hundreds of pounds of "cob" to take the bench close to its final dimensions. I am doing now the "clean job" of the finish.

Establecí el nivel final y lo marqué con listones de madera para rellenar donde hiciera falta.

I defined the final level and set it with wooden strips to fill wherever needed.

Hay una zona donde necesito poder pisar la banca para poder accesar a los páneles eléctricos. Ahí puse unas bonitas piedras laja de color rojo.

There is an area where I need to step on the bench to access the electricity panels. There I laid some beautiful red and thin stones .

Fue muy laborioso rellenar con cob la zona de la chimenea.

It took a lot of effort to fill with cob the area of the chimney.

Ahora a revestir el cob para lograr un terminado más suave.

Now render the cob to reach a smoother finish.

El resultado es bueno y bonito. Peeeero... aun falta la capa final. ¿de qué color? ¿con qué técnica? 

¿Un simple repellado de cal con arena? ¿le agrego pigmentos?

¿me aventuro con con cal bruñida o incluso con Tadelakt? ¿cómo se comportarán los diversos terminados al sucesivamente calentarse y enfriarse la banca? 

¡¡Pues vamos a experimentar!!!

The result is good and beautiful. Buuuuut.... the final layer is still missing. Which color? What technique? A simple render of lime with sand? Should I add some pigments?

Should I venture with burnished lime or even Tadelakt? How will the finish behave to succesive heating and cooling cycles of the bench?

Let´s make some trials!!!!

Pintando con cal / Painting with lime

Entre las cosas que aprendí en el taller de pinturas a la cal, fue el uso de aditivos para mitigar o impedir que la pintura suelte polvillo de cal. Nos dijeron que el aditivo ideal era la caseína. En segundo lugar la dextrina. Como no encontré caseína en el mercado, hice pruebas con dextrina.

Among the things I learned in the workshop on lime paints was the use of additives to mitigate or prevent that the paint generates lime dust. They told us that the ideal additive was caseine and in second place the dextrine. Since I couldn´t find caseine in the marketplace, I made tests with dextrine.

Empecé con diversas dosis de dextrina.Inicialmente las intenté diluir en agua y agregar a la cal en pasta.

I started with different dosis of dextrine. Initially I tried to dillute the dextrine in water and then add to the lime paste.

La idea no resultó bien.  La dextrina se hizo grumos una vez agregada a la cal en pasta. Fue muy laborioso deshacer y disolver los grumos.

The idea was not very good. The dextrine formed clumps once added to the lime paste. I took a great deal of work to separate and dilute the clumps.

¿la solución? Disolver la dextrina en agua muy caliente y después agregar a la cal en pasta. La única pequeña desventaja es que la dextrina imparte una tonalidad ligeramente amarilla a la cal.

The solution? Dissolve the dextrine in very hot water and then add to the lime paste. The only small disadvantage was that the dextrine gave a yellow hue to the lime.

Aquí la primer mano. La pintura se aplica muy fácilmente, pero no cubre mucho.Tuve que dar 4 manos para que quedara bien.

Here the first hand. The paint is applied very easily, but it does not cover much. I had to put 4 hands until it was good.

La gran incógnita: ¿en cuánto tiempo tendré que darle mantenimiento?

The big unknown: how long until I have to maintain it?

 Solamente pinté el cuarto de lectura y el cubo de la escalera. Las demás habitaciones conservarán el color tierra.

I only painted the reading room and the stairway. The other rooms will keep the earthen color.

Aun me falta la transición de blanco a color tierra. Estoy pensando en una especie de hojas de alcachofa que se vayan oscureciendo sucesivamente.

I still have to transition from white to earthen color. I am thinking of a kind of artichoke leaves that get successively darker

Pinturas a la cal 2 / paints with lime 2

Para  pigmentos, me recomendaron una tienda dedicada a productos para el arte. La casa Serra tiene 113 años de existir y ha atendido pintores de la talla de Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo. 

Tiene un catálogo extensísimo de pigmentos, todos ellos muy hermosos.

To get good pigments, someone recommended a store specialized in products for art. "Casa Serra" has been around for 113 years and has served painters such as Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo.

They have a very big catalogue of most beautiful pigments.

Quería comprar solamente dos colores y acabé adquiriendo 6, pues me gustaron mucho y quiero experimentar con ellos.

Originally I wanted to get just 2 colors but I ended buying 6; I liked them very much and I want to make some testing with them,

En cuanto llegué a casa, empecé inmediatamente a probar los pigmentos. El anaranjado es hermosísimo.
As soon as I got home, I started trying the pigments. The orange color is really gorgeous!

Diluí el color en un poco de agua, para mezclarlo posteriormente con la cal en pasta. La intensidad se mantuvo perfectamente.

I dilluted the color in water, to blend it with the lime paste. The intensity of the pigment stayed the same.

Añadí el pigmento a la cal y ...

I added the pigment to the lime and...

... el vibrante anaranjado se convirtió en un color durazno pastel...

... the vibrant orange changed into a peachy pastel color...

¡Muy distinto al color original! Tendré que seguir haciendo pruebas.

Very different from the original color. I´ll have to make more tests.

Ensayando repellos de cal / First trials with lime plasters

¡Al fin llegó la pasta en cal!

Inmediatamente me puse a experimentar en la casita . Mojé la pared de adobe e intenté aplicar la pasta de cal.

The lime paste finally arrived!

I started experimenting immediately in the little house. I wetted the adobe wall and tried to apply the lime paste.

Por mi falta total de experiencia en aplicar repellos, la mitad del material terminó en el piso...
No obstante, logré de alguna manera cubrir un área representativa.

Due to a total lack of experience in applying plasters, half of the material ended in the floor...
However, I somehow managed to cover a representative surface.

Armado con esa "amplia" experiencia, puse manos a la obra en la recámara de arriba. Labré un nicho en la pared, donde se alojará la puerta corrediza.

Armed with that "ample" experience, I put hands to work in the upper bedroom. I carved a niche in the wall, where the sliding door will be housed.

Rápidamente la repellé con tierra. Quedó razonablemente bien.
Quickly I rendered it with earth. It ended reasonably well.

¡Y ahora sí! A agitar la pasta de cal.
And finally! Let´s stirr the lime paste.

Creo que empecé con lo más difícil: hacer esquinas redondadas. Recurrí al viejo método de embarrar y esculpir todo con las manos...

I think I started with the most difficult: make rounded corners. I resorted to the old method of wiping and sculpting everything by hand...

Después de mucho practicar y equivocarme, quedó "más o menos" el terminado. Bastante burdo y disparejo.  La causa: no tuve la precaución de hacer una base parejita. La pasta en cal obviamente copió la superficie irregular.

After a lot of testing and making mistakes, the finsh ended more or less mediocre. Quite rough and uneven. The cause: I dind´t properly prepare the base. The lime paste obviously copied the irregular surface.
