Bardeando / Building walls

Hoy regresé luego de varias semanas de ausencia por andar de viaje. Ya cayeron las primeras lluvias y me llevé una desagradable sorpresa:

Las piedras que usé para los cimientos son demasiado porosas y absorben el agua de la tierra. Se supone que estas piedras deben SEPARAR al "cob" de la humedad del suelo y no transmitirla!

After some weeks of travelling, I finally came back to the construction site. First downpours came and I found a surprise not so nice:

the stones I used for foundation are porous and soke water from the ground. These stones are supposed to keep the "cob" SEPARATED from the ground humidity and not to soak it!

Lo malo es que el adobe se puede reblandecer:

Espero que la barda sobreviva esta temporada de lluvias y tenga yo la oportunidad de reparar este error de diseño. Pienso poner al pie de los cimientos una capa de cemento con piedras de rio formando un canal para que se drene el agua rápidamente y no pueda penetrar al subsuelo.

I hope that the wall survives this rainy season and afterwards I can repair this design flaw. I am thinking of a layer of cement with river stones at the base of the foundation so that water is carried away without percolating.

Por otra parte, ya averigüé de qué son los muchos árboles que han nacido últimamente en el terreno: son capulines ("prunus salicifolia"). Me temo que se están convirtiendo en plaga y tendré que cortar varios de ellos antes de que se conviertan en invasión.

Meanwhile I found out what the many new trees are: they are a sort of very small plum ("Prunus salicifolia"). They are growing into a plague and I¨ll have to take down some before they invade everything.

Los avances fueron modestos hoy, pero ya se empieza a percibir cómo quedará el conjunto finalmente:

The progress today was small, but the wall is already showing its character.

Tejas y la barda / Texas and the wall

Este fin de semana avancé nuevamente un buen tramo. Me estoy apurando porque vienen las lluvias y además estaré nuevamente de viaje las próximas dos semanas.

Produje una gran cantidad de COB para fijar las estructuras de madera a la barda:

This week I made good progress. I am hurrying up because the rain season is approaching and I will be travelling the next 2 weeks again.

I produced a large batch of COB to fix the wooden structures to the wall:

¡E hice la primer curva! Me costó mucho trabajo darle la curvatura adecuada a la estructura de madera...

No avancé tanto como quise, pero experimenté con varios métodos de colocación de tejas.

Ahora sé cómo instalar la estructura de madera en una forma mucho más eficiente. Creo que podré colocar el resto de las tejas con bastante facilidad (y felicidad).

El resultado final me gustó mucho:

And I made the first curvy section! It was very difficult to bend the wood in the right direction...

I also experimented with different styles of laying the tiles. I learned how to mount the wooden structure in the most efficient way. I believe I will be able to lay the rest of the tiles with easy (and happiness).

The final result was very nice: 

Hoy hubo el primer incidente de seguridad en la obra: una señora se detuvo en su auto a ver la barda y atropelló mi señalamiento...

Me enojé un poco, pero pensé que ello sucedió porque la barda está quedando muy bonita...

Today I had the first safety incident while at work. A lady stopped by with her car to see the wall and drove over my safety triangle...

I was somewhat upset but then I thought: this happened because the wall is very beautiful...

La barda y Tejas / The wall and Texas

No, no estoy hablando de una barda entre Tejas y México!! :-)

Después de casi un mes de ausencia (he viajado muchísimo las últimas semanas) construí un pequeño prototipo para adquirir experiencia y remediar los errores en el resto de la barda.

El pobre Warthank ahora sí vino supercargado de cosas:

No, I am not talking about a wall between Texas and exico!!!:-).

After a month of absence (I have been travelling extensively) I built a small protoype to gain experience and remedy the mistakes in the rest of the wall.

Hice unos pequeños triángulos que van embebidos en la cumbre de la pared. Enmedio de los triángulos pasa el conducto con la instalación eléctrica:

I made small wooden triangles which will be embedded at the top of the wall. In the center of the triangle is the electrical conduit.

Sobre esos triángulos estoy fijando listones de madera y sobre los listones de madera, irán las tejas que protegerán a la barda del agua:

On the triangles, wooden strips and on top of them the tiles that will protect the wall from rain.
Hice solamente una sección recta y por lo tanto fácil. Quedó bastante bonita. Sin embargo, la prueba de fuego será en las partes curvas. Espero lograr que las transiciones sean suaves, continuas...

I only did a straight section, therefore quite easy. It is beautiful. However, the real test will come in the round sections. I hope to get smooth, continuous transitions...

The Wall (o: Concluí la obra negra (¿o debo decir "obra café"?) (or: did I finish the "in white" part? Or should I say "in brown part"?)

También hice la instalación eléctrica (aunque ni siquiera he solicitado el servicio de electricidad a CFE).

I also finished the electrical installation (even though I Haven´t even requested the service from the public utility CFE)

También hice una pequeña prueba instalando algunas tejas "tipo árabe" para proteger la barda del agua cuando llueva.

I also did a small test putting some "arab style" tiles to protect the wall from rain.

Una vez en casa, luego de ducharme, me vi los pies: como hoy usé sandalias, con el sol se me quemaron los pies en una extraña forma:

Ocne at home and after taking a shower, I saw my feet: today I used sandals and I have a weird sunburn.

El sindicato / The Union

El sábado pasado me visitó por segunda vez en la obra un representante de conocido sindicato. La primera vez -hace meses- me exigió afiliar a "mis albañiles" con su sindicato si quería yo evitarme problemas. Le expliqué entonces que yo estaba autoconstruyendo y se fue enfurruñado.

Ahora pasó de nuevo y en un tono bastante altanero me dijo: - "¡¡¡tus papeles!!!¿¿dónde los tienes??"

-"¿quién pregunta?¿me viene a ayudar?" le respondí . Apenas olió trabajo y me reconoció. Empezamos a platicar y me confesó que no creía que yo estuviera trabajando solo. Me amenazó cordialmente con que vigilará para comprobar que tengo albañiles. Le pedí que mejor me afiliara a mí al sindicato, puesto que tengo un jefe tacaño y que me obliga a trabajar largas horas extras los fines de semana sin darme mucho de comer (yo mismo). Se fue inmediatamente ;-)))

¿Será que me vio vestido de esta manera y por eso mejor me dejó en paz? Creo que asumió que no había mucho que obtener...

I was visited for the second time by a Union representative. The first time he demanded that I get unionized along with my helpers (which I do not have) to avoid problems.Back then I explained I was self-building and he left upset.

Today he visited again and in quite bad manners demanded that I show a Union affiliation. My answer: are you here to help me? 

We sarted chatting and revealed he didn´t believe I was working alone. He friendly threatened to watch for another construction workers. I asked him to better affilate myself: my supervisor is very demanding and does not pay well and forces me to work duering the weekend withou feeding me. He left immediately  ;-)))

Fui papá!!!! I became father!!!!!!

La semana pasada nacieron por lo menos 20 avispas dentro de mi pantalón de trabajo.

En agosto ví cuando la mamá avispa empezaba a fabricar el panal (ver blog del 10 de agosto de 2009). En ese momento no volví a usar mi pantalón para dejar a las avispas en paz.

Last week, at least 20 wasps were born in my working Levis.

In August I saw mother wasp building the honeycomb (see blog of August 10, 2009)

Since that moment I did not use my trousers to leave the wasps alone.

Hoy llegué y los panales ya estaban abiertos. Lástima que no pude ver el momento del nacimiento. Debe haber sido interesante... Me sorprende que les haya tomado 6 - 7 meses en nacer!

Today when I arrived the combs were open. A pitty I coud not witnes the moment of birth. It must have been quite interesting... I am surprised that they took 6 - 7 months to hatch!

Hubo tres panales que no se abrieron. En uno de ellos estaba la avispa perfectamente formada, pero creo que no tuvo la fuerza necesaria para romper la puerta de su "nido". En otros dos casos, encontré el cadáver de la avispa con dos arañas muertas. Probablemente fue el alimento que les depositaron para que comieran durante su transformación fallida.

Three combs were still sealed. Inside one, the wasp was perfectly formed but I believe it didn´t have the stamina necessary to breake free from its nest.

In other 2 cases I found the wasp with spiders. The spiders probably were the foo left by the mum to be eaten during their transformation.

¿y el muro? Pues progresé muchísimo, pero todavía me faltan un par de horas para concluir la parte burda. Espero que esto suceda el próximo fin de semana. Posteriormente me encargaré de la instalación eléctrica, las tejas y el repellado. 'ai la llevo....

And the wall? I did a lot of progress but still need some hours to finish the main part.Hopefully next week. The: electrical wiring, tiles and rendering. There I go!

The Wall (8) ¡¡¡no más silicato de sodio!!!! No more sodium silicate!!!!!

En los días de Semana Santa y este fin de semana pude avanzar mucho. Ya completé los cinco arcos que estarán incluidos en la pared.

Aquí se muestra cómo se va cubriendo el molde con cob. El palo en la parte superior quedará enterrado en el cob y a él atornillaré las lámparas posteriormente. Los clavos sirven para que el palo quede atrapado en la tierra. También estoy preparando la instalación eléctrica.

During the Easter weekend the progress was good. I completed the 5 arches in the wall.

Here it is shown how the mold is covered with cob. The piece of wood at the apex will be buried in the cob and the lamps will be screwed to it. The protruding nails will anchor the wood into the cob.

I am also lying the wiring.

Por último, finalicé la serie de experimentos usando silicato de sodio como aglutinante del tepetate. Solamente confirmé mis impresiones anteriores: el silicato provoca que el lodo sea menos pegajoso, se crean grumos y resulta muy difícil mezclar con la paja. Solamente añadiendo mucha agua se logra una mezcla apenas satisfactoria:

Lastly, I did some more testing using sodium silicate to glue together the dirt. I just confirmed earlier impressions: the silicate reduces the stickiness , creates clumps and is very difficult to mix with straw.

Only with a lot of water, you get a hardly acceptable wet mix:

Sin embargo, al estar tan húmeda, esta mezcla fluye mucho una vez puesta sobre la pared (fenómeno llamado "splooging" por los expertos) y forma un desagradable hongo que hay que repasar con el machete cuando está un poco más seco.

Conclusión: el silicato de sodio no sirve para mis condiciones particulares de tierra. Ya no lo emplearé màs...

However, being so wet, this mix flows a lot once it is placed on the wall (so called splooging by the experts) and forms a "mushroom" that has to be cut away with a machete.

Conclusion: sodium silicate does not help in my particular conditions of earth. I will discontinue its use...
