Trabajando en equipo / Teamwork

Mis hijas me ayudaron a revestir el muro con la primer capa.

My daughters helped me with the scratch coat of the wall.

¡Quedó muy bien con su ayuda!

Solamente me falta darle el aplanado final. Aún no sé si la dejaré totalmente blanca (solo con cal) o si hago un tono ligeramente café o intensamente café (mezclando diferentes proporciones de tepetate).

Haré más pruebas en estas semanas...

This is the good result of their help!

The final plaster is yet to come. I still don´t know if to make it totally white (only lime) or slighltly brown or completely brown (by mixing different ratios of soil).

I will make some tests in the next weeks...

Haciendo concesiones... / Making concessions

Después de varios experimentos fallidos con aplanados y revoques naturales, me dí por vencido temporalmente  y empleé la clásica cal con arena.

Los resultados son buenos, como era de esperarse. Estoy parcialmente satisfecho:  quisiera haber empleado solamente materiales que se encontraran en el terreno, pero no me fue posible ahora.

Seguiré experimentando en los próximos muros. Óscar y David me han dado buenos consejos que espero poner en práctica.

En todo caso, el muro se ve bonito. Ya concluí el aplanado de la cara que da al terreno. Los próximos fines de semana proseguiré con el lado que da a la calle.

After several failed experiments with natural renders and plasters, I temporarily conceded defeat and started using the classic lime with sand.

The results are good, as expected. I am partially content: I would have preferred to use only materials found at the site, but it was not possible. 

I will continue experimenting i future walls. Oscar and David have given me some advice that needs to be put into practice.

In any case, the wall looks nice. I finished the inside face. The coming weekends I will do the street side.

En especial me gusta que se pueden ver los cimientos y la irregular linea de unión del cob con la piedra...

I particularly like that the foundation is visible, as well as the irregular line of the cob and the stone...

¡Ni la tercera es la vencida! tercer experimento infructuoso / third trial, also a fail!

Hoy intenté una nueva fórmula para el aplanado del muro: cal y tepetate cernido. La mezcla quedó "chocolatosa" y con un muy agradable color café

Today I tried with yet another formulation to plaster the wall: lime and finely sieved soil. The wet mixture is "chocolate-like" and with a very nice brown color:

Los resultados aparentaban ser mejores:

The results seemed to be better:

Pero en cuanto se secó bien, aparecieron nuevamente grandes grietas.

But as soon as they dried out, big cracks appeared once more:

Además, constaté que como aplanador de paredes muero de hambre:  necesité 4 horas para tan solo cuatro metros cuadrados!!!

And I found out that I am a quite slow plasterer: I needed 4 hours for only 40 suare feet.

"Babeando como nopal" o " dos experimentos fallidos" / "Salivating as a prickling pear" or "two failed experiments"

Desafortunadamente los dos primeros experimentos para el aplanado de la barda resultaron fallidos.
En la primer ocasión mezclé el tepetate cernido con la baba de nopal.

Unfortunatelly the first two experiments to plaster the wall failed. For the first one I mixed finely sieved earth with mucilage from prickling pears.

Con esa pasta hice un repellado de aprox. 1 - 2 cm de espesor.

Sin embargo, se agrietó muchísimo:

With this paste I did a plaster of 1/2"- 1" thickness.

However, it got severely cracked:

Tuve que quitar esa capa. Dañé un poco la pared debajo:

I had to remove this layer. I slightly damaged the base material:

Posteriormente preparé la misma mezcla y la coloqué sobre el muro, pero esta vez le dí de mazasos mientras se iba secando. Con ello pretendía cerrar las grietas conforme se aparecían debido a la contracción de la tierra conforme se iba secando.

Afterwards, I prepared the same recipe and placed it on the wall. This time I hammered it continuosly as it was drying. I intended to close cracks as they appeared when the earth contracted while drying.

Fue un trabajo agotador y casi completamente inútil:  a pesar de que las grietas resultaron mucho más pequeñas, fueron demasiadas y afectaron demasiado la calidad de la superficie, misma que tuve que volver a quitar:

It was very tiresome and useless: while the cracks were much smaller, they appeared everywhere and affected the surface too much. I had to remive this layer also:

Tengo que pensar en una alternativa radicalmente distinta que emplee materiales 100% naturales y que requieran poca energía para su fabricación...
 Espero tener mejores resultados empleando ahora cal con tepetate cernido.
Desafortunadamente el siguiente experimento tendrá que esperar, pues me voy de viaje nuevamente...

I have to find a radically other alternative using 100% natural materials with a low embedded energy...

I hope to achieve better results next time using lime with sieved soil.

Unfortunatelly the next experiment will have to wait: I am once again travelling...

Hoy me encontré con que las máquinas avanzaron un par de metros más dentro de la zona federal y ¡¡¡atropellaron a tres de los árboles que sembré!!!!

El fresno que me regaló Marco de plano fue arrasado,  y dos encinos sufrieron grave daños. Inmediatamente fui a comprar triplay y pintura para hacer letreros de precaución.

Today I found that the construction machinery invaded the Federal Zone and drove over 3 of the trees I had planted.

The ash that Marco had given me as a gift was completely destroyed and two oaks suffered bad damage. I got some plywood and piant to make some precaution signs:

Le hice este letrero para evitar que lo vuelvan a atropellar.  ¡ojalá se recupere!

I made this sign. Hopefully the little oak will recover!

Este encino no se vio afectado, pero por si acaso, tambien le puse un letrero:

Quiero creer que se trató de accidentes provocados por los operarios de la pala mecánica y no una instrucción del arquitecto o dueño de la casa. En todo caso, mañana le enviaré una carta pidiendo más cuidado. Espero que con ello se resuelva este tema. Estos son los letreros en perspectiva, desde el terreno que está en construcción:

I want to believe that the damage was caused by careless operators of the machinery and not by instructions from the home owner. In any case, I´ll send him a letter asking to be more carefull. I hope this solves the problem.

Y a lo que iba, que era continuar con el aplanado, pues ya no me dio tiempo de hacer nada.  La primer capa que puse se agrietó totalmente.

Se ve muy bonita agrietada y hasta pensé en dejar así toda la pared; sin embargo ello no sería funcional ya que el agua podría penetrar y/o los insectos hacer sus nidos...

 I couldn´t  make any progress today in the plastering. The first layer is completely cracked.

It looks beautiful so full of cracks and I even thought of leaving it that way; however, this would not be functional since water could sickle in and insects find a way for their nests...

Aquí una vista de detalle. Tengo dos hipótesis sobre la falla:  tierra con demasiada arcilla o bien coloqué el aplanado cuando el material estaba demasiado húmedo. 

Here a close look. I have two hypothesis on the mistake:  earth with too much clay or I layed the plaster while the material was still too wet.

Podré proseguir experimentando cuando regrese  (me voy tres semanas y pico de viaje..)

I will continue when I am back (I will be travelling for almost 3 weeks...)

Babas, ecodefensa y otras cosas / Saliva, ecodefense and other things...

Dado que está en riesgo la integridad de la  zona federal por la obra de mi vecino, hoy establecí una linea de "ecodefensa" plantando varios árboles.

 Fueron:

•  5 encinos que me regalaron en el vivero de Naucalli (Erika: gracias por el tip)
• 1 fresno que me regaló Marco, quien también estaba reforestando hoy (¡gracias!)
• 1 liquidámbar que compré hace un par de semanas

Espero que los 7 soldados detengan el avance de las máquinas. Estos son algunos de los "defensores":

The Federal area is at risk by the construction of my neighbor. I established a line of "eco-defense" planting several trees:

* 5 oaks given as a gift in the tree nursery in Naucalli (Erika: thanks for the tip!)

* 1 ash that Marco gave me. He was also planting trees (thanks!)

* 1 liquidambar I bought some weeks ago

I hope that the 7 soldiers stop the machines. These are some of the defenders:

Para poder bajar a la zona federal tuve que invertir mucho tiempo y esfuerzo en acondicionar una pequeña vereda:

To reach the Federal area, I had to invest a lot of time and effort to make a small trail:

Finalmente, lo que más me interesaba hoy:  ¡¡¡aplanar las paredes usando baba de nopal!!!!  Dejé los nopales macerando hace 2 semanas y hoy que los destapé olían espantosamente mal...

And still, I achieved my goal:  plaster the walls with cactus mucilage!!!! I left the prickly pears soaking in water 2 weeks ago. When I uncovered them today, they smelled terrible!!!

Sin embargo, entregaron toda su "baba" al agua y ésta quedó con una consistencia pegajosa:

Anyhow, they surrendered all their saliva or mucilage and the water is now sticky:

Me dio tiempo de hacer el repellado de unos cuantos metros cuadrados: 

I could make some square foot of plastering:

El resultado lo podré ver hasta la próxima semana, en cuanto se haya secado. También quiero hacer una pequeña sección de comparación SIN usar baba de nopal (como experimento de control).

El resto del año me la pasaré viajando mucho tiempo en muchas ocasiones, por lo que los avances serán aun más lentos...

I will see the result only in a couple of weeks, when it dries out. I also want to plaster a section without cactus mucilage, to compare with.

The rest of the year I will be travelling. Progress will be even slower...
