Sufro una cruel pena... / I suffer a cruel pain....

Estuve de viaje estas semanas y no me aparecía por el terreno hace un mes. Me llevé una desagradable sorpresa:  ya compraron un terreno al otro lado de la cañada y lo empezaron a construir. Encontré una enorme máquina conformando toda la topografía (y dándole en la torre a los árboles):

I was out several weeks and didn´t show up for the last month. I had a bad surprise: the land across the creek has been sold and there is a lot of earth movement. I found an enormous excavator conforming the topography (and affecting lots of trees):

También cambiaron el curso del arroyo que fluye estacionalmente en el fondo de la cañada:

They also changed the course of the small creek flowing in the gully. 

Desafortunadamente, este terreno queda en mi vista. Espero que por lo menos la casa que construirán  quede bonita.

Unfortunatelly this land is at my sight. I hope that the house they will build is beautiful.

Cambiando de tema:  avancé un poco más en la colocación de piedras de rio en la base del muro:

Changing subject: I made some progress laying river stones at the base of the wall:

¿será éste el remedio? / Is this the remediation?

Ayer y hoy coloqué un par de metros cuadrados de piedras de rio embebidas en cemento a lo largo del cimiento. Mi teoría es que la capa de cemento:

a) evitará que el agua se permee al subsuelo y por lo tanto no podrá ser absorbida por el muro

b) permitirá que el agua de lluvia fluya rápidamente alejándose del muro

Yester- and today  I laid some square feet of river stones embedded in cement along the foundation of the wall. My theory is that the layer of cement:

a) will prevent rain water from percolating into the ground and therefore will not be available to be sucken by the porous stones of the wall

b) will allow the rainwater to quickly flow away from the wall

No estoy muy contento de usar cemento pero en este caso creo que es una buena opción para corregir el problema de humedades. Sabré si este remedio funciona apenas hasta la próxima temporada de lluvias, ya que durante esta temporada no terminaré de colocar toda la franja necesaria ...

I am not quite happy using cement, but in this case I believe it is a good option to solve the issue of excess humidity at the base of the wall. I will know if it works only after the next rain season. I won´t be ready on time for this running season...

A quien madruga, Tlaloc lo ayuda / He who starts early, gets a little help from the raingod Tlaloc

Ya que está lloviendo todas las tardes, hoy empecé muy temprano a trabajar.

Afortunadamente terminé de colocar todas la tejas minutos antes de que Tlaloc (¿o fue Chac?) enviara su lluvia. Estoy muy contento con el resultado final, aunque todavía faltan algunos detalles (las tejas al inicio y al final de la barda aun no están en su posición final y quiero ajustar algunas tejas , pues sobresalen demasiado):

Since it is raining all afternoons, today I started very early.

Fortunatelly, I finished laying all the tiles shortly before Tlaloc (or was it Chac, the other god of rain?) sent rain. I am very happy with the final result, even there are still some details to be worked out (the tiles at the start and end are not in proper position and some other tiles need finetuning.

En estas fotos se nota perfectamente una banda de humedad en la base de la pared: como lo mencioné en un blog anterior, las piedras de los cimientos son muy porosas y estàn absorbiendo el agua del suelo, humedeciendo el adobe. La próxima semana espero iniciar con la urgente corrección de este error. Temo que se suavice demasiado la pared y se pueda derrumbar...

The next photo shows a band of humidity at the bottom of the wall. As mentioned in an earlier blog, the foundation stones are sucking the water from the ground and are wetting the adobe. 

I hope to start with the repair next week. Else the wall can weaken too much...

Cuando quise quitar uno de los moldes para los arcos de la barda, me encontré con una colonia de hormigas. Me dio mucha lástima destruir su casa y las cientos de larvas que tenían acumuladas por lo que dejé todo en su lugar para que puedan nacer. También evité la tentación de comer "escamoles" :-))

When taking off one of the molds for the arcs, I found an ant colony. I was sorry to destroy their home and the hundreds of larvae so I left everything in place for life to go on. I stayed away from the temptation to eat ant eggs :-))

Literatura / Literature

¡¡¡Ya me llegaron los 3 libros que me regaló mi sobrina Marion!!!

Se trata de:

• dos libros de "Rainwater Harvesting for drylands and beyond" (cosechando agua de lluvia en terrenos áridos). Estos libros aconsejan como construir gaviones, represas y estanques para evitar que el agua de lluvia fluya demasiado rápidamente y se pierda. Sobra decir que en el terreno quiero construir un estanque para capturar agua de lluvia..

• y el "Builder's Greywater Guide" (guía del constructor para aguas grises), que explica como se pueden separar los drenajes de aguas negras (los que provienen de excusados) y los drenajes de aguas grises (los que vienen de regaderas, lavadora, lavabos) para aprovechar estas aguas grises en el riego de jardines o bien para regenerar el agua por métodos biológico

En las próximas semanas iré aprendiendo de estos temas para aplicarlos en una fecha que espero no sea muy lejana...

My niece Marion gave me 3 books as a gift. They just arrived!!!

* two books of "Rainwater Harvesting for drylands and beyond". These books take you through the art of building small dams, gabions and ponds to prevent rainwater from flowing too quickly. I have to say that I would like to build a pond later on.

* and the "Builder's Greywater Guide" that explains how to build separate sewers for grey water and sewage. Grey water comes from showers, washing machines, sinks  and the latter coming from toilets. This is done in order to water the garden or regenerate the grey water with biological processes.

In the coming weeks I will be learning about said themes to apply the knowledge not too long from now...

Paso a pasito quedará la barda / Small steps towards the wall

Hoy avancé unos cuantos metros más:

Today I advanced some more yards:
 

Me costó bastante trabajo instalar los listones de madera de tal manera que sigan la curvatura de la barda. ¡debe haber una mejor manera de hacerlo! pero no la he encontrado. El trabajo es sumamente artesanal, ya que debo hacer una perforación en cada teja en el lugar exacto para atornillarla a la base de madera. Es un trabajo laborioso; aquí se puede ver la estructura que dejé preparada para el próximo fin de semana:

I am trying to follow the "curviness" of the wall with wooden strips. But it is proving more difficult than expected. There must be a better way, but I haven´t found it. The work is 100% handcraft: I have to drill each tile at the exact spot to be affixed to the wooden strip, It is a labor intensive work. This picture shows the preparation for the upcomig weekend:

Como me gustan mucho los "lichis" o "lychees", sembré unas cuantas semillas para ver si las plantas resistirán la temporada de frios en invierno:

Since I like lychees a lot, I am planting some seed to find out if they can become aclimatized

Bardeando / Building walls

Hoy regresé luego de varias semanas de ausencia por andar de viaje. Ya cayeron las primeras lluvias y me llevé una desagradable sorpresa:

Las piedras que usé para los cimientos son demasiado porosas y absorben el agua de la tierra. Se supone que estas piedras deben SEPARAR al "cob" de la humedad del suelo y no transmitirla!

After some weeks of travelling, I finally came back to the construction site. First downpours came and I found a surprise not so nice:

the stones I used for foundation are porous and soke water from the ground. These stones are supposed to keep the "cob" SEPARATED from the ground humidity and not to soak it!

Lo malo es que el adobe se puede reblandecer:

The bad thing is that the adobe can become wet and weak:

Espero que la barda sobreviva esta temporada de lluvias y tenga yo la oportunidad de reparar este error de diseño. Pienso poner al pie de los cimientos una capa de cemento con piedras de rio formando un canal para que se drene el agua rápidamente y no pueda penetrar al subsuelo.

I hope that the wall survives this rainy season and afterwards I can repair this design flaw. I am thinking of a layer of cement with river stones at the base of the foundation so that water is carried away without percolating.

Por otra parte, ya averigüé de qué son los muchos árboles que han nacido últimamente en el terreno: son capulines ("prunus salicifolia"). Me temo que se están convirtiendo en plaga y tendré que cortar varios de ellos antes de que se conviertan en invasión.

Meanwhile I found out what the many new trees are: they are a sort of very small plum ("Prunus salicifolia"). They are growing into a plague and I¨ll have to take down some before they invade everything.

Los avances fueron modestos hoy, pero ya se empieza a percibir cómo quedará el conjunto finalmente:

The progress today was small, but the wall is already showing its character.

Tejas y la barda / Texas and the wall

Este fin de semana avancé nuevamente un buen tramo. Me estoy apurando porque vienen las lluvias y además estaré nuevamente de viaje las próximas dos semanas.

Produje una gran cantidad de COB para fijar las estructuras de madera a la barda:

This week I made good progress. I am hurrying up because the rain season is approaching and I will be travelling the next 2 weeks again.

I produced a large batch of COB to fix the wooden structures to the wall:

¡E hice la primer curva! Me costó mucho trabajo darle la curvatura adecuada a la estructura de madera...

No avancé tanto como quise, pero experimenté con varios métodos de colocación de tejas.

Ahora sé cómo instalar la estructura de madera en una forma mucho más eficiente. Creo que podré colocar el resto de las tejas con bastante facilidad (y felicidad).

El resultado final me gustó mucho:

And I made the first curvy section! It was very difficult to bend the wood in the right direction...

I also experimented with different styles of laying the tiles. I learned how to mount the wooden structure in the most efficient way. I believe I will be able to lay the rest of the tiles with easy (and happiness).

The final result was very nice: 

Hoy hubo el primer incidente de seguridad en la obra: una señora se detuvo en su auto a ver la barda y atropelló mi señalamiento...

Me enojé un poco, pero pensé que ello sucedió porque la barda está quedando muy bonita...

Today I had the first safety incident while at work. A lady stopped by with her car to see the wall and drove over my safety triangle...

I was somewhat upset but then I thought: this happened because the wall is very beautiful...
