¡Bien protegido me dedico a soldar la estructura! ¿de mal humor? ¡Por supuesto que no! Estoy concentrado...

Well protected I can now weld the structure! Bad mood? Of course not! I am concentrated...

¡La calidad de los cordones de soldadura es cada vez mejor! ¿o debo decir "menos mala"?

The quality of the welding seams is becoming better! Or should I say "less bad"?

¡OUCH! Me cayó una "perla" de soldadura al rojo vivo, me quemó la ropa, se metió dentro e hizo un pequeño desastre. Dolió un poco...  

OUCH! A red hot welding "pearl" burned through my shirt and broke havoc. It hurt a little...

Estoy cortando y pintando los perfiles PTR en serie. Es mucho más eficiente así.

I am cutting and painting the steel profiles in series. It is so much more efficient.

Y pronto erijo los primeros ensambles.

And soon I can erect the first assemblies.

A falta de andamios, improviso con escaleras y aumentos.

Lacking scaffolds, I improvise with ladders and extensions.

La estructura está casi lista. Nótense los cables que tensan la parte volada (cantilever). De esa manera queda una gran área libre de columnas para que los autos se puedan maniobrar con facilidad.

The structure is almost ready. See the cables pulling the cantilever section. This way there is a big area without columns so that the cars can easily maneuver.

Instalo un "paso de gato" que me permitirá dar mantenimiento a las celdas solares que instalaré posteriormente.

I install a "cat walk" to maintain the photovoltaic cells I´ll install later on.

 Finalizo soldando estos soportes para colocar escaleras, herramientas y cosas diversas.

I finish welding these supporting bars for ladders, tools and parafernalia.

En forma excepcional, en los siguientes capítulos abordaré la construcción con acero y soldadura en lugar de "construcción natural"  ¿La razón?  Pura vanidad: adquirí la nueva habilidad de soldador y la estoy presumiendo. Pido perdón a mis dos lectores...

Exceptionally, in the next chapters I will share construction with steel and welding instead of  "natural construction". The reason? Pure vanity: I learned how to weld and I am showing off. To my two readers: please excuse me...

Practiqué con perfil "PTR". Las primeras soldaduras fueron horrorosas. 

Como dice mi querido amigo Andreas: unos cacahuates muy malos. Y también perforé la lámina por parámetros inadecuados.

I practiced with steel profiles. The first seams were horrendous. 

As my dear friend Andreas says: worse than peanuts. I also blow holes in the plate due to bad parameters...

Después de practicar mucho, las soldaduras mejoraron un poquito.

After a lot of practice, the welding seams improved a little bit.

¡Estos cordones todavía son muy feos pero funcionales!

These weld seams are still ugly, but work!

¡Y ya me atrevo a hacer los primeros ensambles!

And I dare to make the first assemblies!

¿qué tienen en común la construcción de adobe y la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú?  Sí!!! El laboratorio de estructuras antisísmicas!

La semana pasada estuve en Lima, Perú en un viaje de trabajo. Sabiendo que me interesa mucho la construcción con adobe, mis compañeros en la localidad, Javier y Miguel, me llevaron a visitar a la PUCP (Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú). Ahí, logramos ir al laboratorio de estructuras antisísmicas:

What do the construction with adobe and the Pontificial & Catholic University from Peru have in common? Yes!!! The laboratory of antiseismic structures!

Last week I was in Lima, Peru. Knowing my enormous interest in the construction with adobe, my colleagues there, Javier and Miguel took me to the PUCP (Pontificial and Catholic University from Peru). There, we could visit the laboratory of antiseismic structures:

Ahí existe una enorme mesa que se puede hacer oscilar simulando intensos sismos. Sobre esa mesa se construyen las estructuras cuya resistencia a los terremotos se quiere verificar.
Cuando tuve la fortuna de visitar el laboratorio, acababan de probar cuatro estructuras de adobe:

They have an enormous shake-table to simulate intense earthquakes. On that table, diverse adobe structures are built that are then tested to ´quakes.

They just had tested 4 structures when I arrived at the lab: 

Como se puede apreciar, las estructuras reforzadas con mucha paja y / o malla de alambre, resistieron mucho más que las estructuras sin estos refuerzos:

Structures that are very much reinforced with straw and/or chicken wire mesh resisted substantially more than structures without said reinforcements:

Desafortunadamente no estaban los responsables de las construcciones de adobe, por lo que no pude platicar con ellos; sin embargo, mis colegas me prometieron que conseguirán los contactos correspondientes.

El viaje a Perú fue profesionalmente muy productivo, pero en lo personal estuve muy contento de poder visitar a la PUCP. ¡mil gracias a mis colegas!

Unfortunatelly the responsibles for the adobe constructions where not there, so I couldn´t talk to them. My colleagues promised to get the contacts!

The trip to Peru was professionally very productive,and personally I was very happy to visit the PUCP. Thousand thanks to my colleagues!!!
